Josh and Sam’s NYC Engagement

Friendships that start in unexpected places often grow into some of the most meaningful connections. Nearly ten years ago, I met my friend Josh while working at my first newspaper in Western Massachusetts. He was one of those coworkers who quickly became a genuine friend, someone I knew I’d stay connected with long after leaving the newsroom. Fast forward to this past year, when I had the joy of meeting his girlfriend, Sam, at a wedding I photographed for our mutual friend Aviva. It was clear from the start that Josh and Sam shared something special—and as it turned out, Josh had been planning an unforgettable proposal to show her just how much she means to him.

Josh designed a personalized zine, complete with a crossword puzzle tailored specifically to their relationship. Each clue was delivered to Sam by friends at different locations throughout New York City, turning the day into an adventure that reflected the creativity, community, and love that define their relationship. It was part scavenger hunt, part love letter, and entirely Josh’s style—thoughtful, intentional, and full of heart.

The day was warm and full of anticipation as Sam pieced together the clues and followed the trail Josh had so carefully set. Every stop brought her closer to the final destination: the stunning Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City. With the Manhattan skyline glowing in the background and the East River at their feet, Josh asked the question that would change both of their lives.

I was lucky enough to be there, camera in hand, documenting not just the proposal itself but the joy, surprise, and excitement that filled every moment. Here are some of the photographs from this beautiful, one-of-a-kind New York City proposal—a celebration of love, creativity, and the beginning of Josh and Sam’s next chapter together.
